While I was pulling out the knee high weeds that had grown up on my side yard last weekend, I was so excited to find a snapdragon that had randomly sprouted and was blooming. This is especially fantastic because stores around here only sell snapdragons and other such annuals for a couple weeks, and if you don't happen in the short time they have them and buy them right that minute, you will be out of luck later. Everyone seems to think you can't grow anything but Florida weeds and hibiscus here in the summer. It's not true. You just need to give snapdragons and other annuals lots and lots of water.
So I was thrilled with this snapdragon taking it upon itself to grow where it was not planted. However, while trying to avoid ripping it out when pulling weeds, I accidentally lopped it off with my knee.

My only choice was to bring it in the house and put it in a vase on the coffee tabe to grace the room with its colorful style. When I came in there the next morning at about 7:15, I discovered a ray of light bouncing off of a mirror and landing like a spotlight on the blossom, as if it was the star of the show taking a bow to wild applause. I immediately grabbed my camera and took about 50 blurry shots of it. Hmph! I blew it.
The spotlight lasted only a few minutes, so I had to wait until the next morning to try again for some more photos. I did try, but still wasn't quite able to capture the effect of the light and color all that well.
You get the idea.
I love how a couple of free flowers from the yard and a single ray of sunshine can light up the morning. Keep your eyes peeled and you too might find something bright and pretty to make you run for your camera this week!

Much of my garden has been planted by the birds. Or, one plant seeds itself all over the yard. I never know what I will find.

ReplyDeleteSnapdragons even stop blooming here in Minnesota sometimes when it gets hot. They like it cool. It is 90 here and we are getting a storm. Thanks for shring your snapdragon, Liz. I did not plant any this year.

ReplyDeleteHow many times have I done the same thing, with buds bursting from the stem into the flower, fresh and young and waiting for its time in the sun, to shine! And then, clumsy me comes along and cuts its life short. I get very sad when this happens, flowers are such delicate beauties.
I am in love with your first photo; you DID capture the pretty snapdragon in all its sweetness and simplicity. Lovely!

ReplyDeleteI was out at the coop, letting the chickens out when I saw it...
you see, I have such tall trees right out my front door that when the sun begins to peak up over the horizon there is just an orange glow, glinting through the dry grass and barely visible through the Cedars and the scrub brush on the barbed wire fence across the road.
So, you can imagine my surprise--when my back was to the sun, seeing the tops of the trees behind my house lit up, as though they were ablaze with the newness of the dawn, while the undersides were still shadowed with the sleepiness of morning.
Yeah... I missed it with my camera.
But I 'rememberized' it with my mind!
...you can trust me, right?

Beautiful! Snapdragons are one of my favorite flowers (I just cut some to put in vases in the house!) and even here in the Midwest, SOME do come back each year. Your arrangement is so pretty -- nothing like fresh and yes, free flowers to brighten a room!
