Specialty of the House

This post has been updated with the link to the recipe!

The shelf which serves as our kitchen window treatment, now has an accompanist, a new sign.
When this little cart rolled home with me from a curbside pile on trash day not long ago, the broken drop leaves had no where to go and nothing to do. They were just hanging there off the lock hinges like my arms when carrying an overly heavy load of groceries in from the car (all in one trip -two trips is for sissies), so I removed the wood and the lock hinges and gave the little cart a rest. Then the wood did what much of the salvage around here does. It sat in the to-do pile.

I've been wanting to paint some signs, so with this wood on hand, and after much inner debate, a sign reminiscent of one of the true loves of this household was born.

We make homemade hot fudge all the time. It's a wonder we don't struggle with our weight, but we don't. We are a lean people.

The sign painting was not without setbacks, and it obviously didn't turn out perfectly, ending up with quite a bit of empty space and the crammed words and graphic, but that just adds to its charm, or so I tell myself. After a trial and error process whereby I created the type for the sign on the computer and finally found a hot fudge sundae graphic that might work, I tested things out on the back and it was a "fail". So I regrouped, reworked and in the end wished I had taken a bit more time because I got in a hurry, as I often do and, and let's just say, placement could've been better. Ah well, it's done and that's a big enough deal for me these days.

I was going to put a price (25¢) on it, but wasn't sure I'd like the look. It may end up finding its way on here later on the right, maybe at an angle. We'll see.
I don't know about you but that little picture of the ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream is tempting. I'm pretty pleased with my rendition of it. I used some silver paint for the bowl, and in the light it shimmers like icy cold glass.

My son was kind enough to make hot fudge for us yesterday, unfortunately now we are critically low on ice cream! Curses! Ever since they cut the half gallon down to 1.5, we never have enough. When there's ice cream, it's good to have hot fudge to go with it, but it's even more important when you have hot fudge to also have ice cream! Not that we aren't capable of eating hot fudge straight up by the spoonful. Oh, yes, we are.

Or wait, is that just me?

Still, there's nothing like the whole shebang! Homemade hot fudge on Breyers natural vanilla...that's one of the specialties of this house. Thankfully Casey was willing to stop on her way home from work to pick up ice cream if needed, despite the late hour.

It's good to have back up in times of need.

  2. Love the vintage feel of the sign. At first I thought you had found another old one to go with the giant pickle. I am afraid I do not see the flaws. Liz. You are too hard on yourself. By the way, you neglected to include the recipe for the hot fudge! You don't start with a base of pound cake!?!

  4. LOVE the sign - hate that you don't gain weight - ( and stop bragging about that fact, k? )
Also love the shelf on top of the window
And I agree - 2 trips is definitely for wimps - I carry so many in at a time - that the marks stay on my arms for hours after lol

  5. I LOVE the sign, and the thought of making hot fudge. But I am on a diet. So I will file for a non-diet week!

  13. Oh my, I'm drooling over here. I adore hot fudge, especially by the spoonful! I'm definitely going to try this recipe. The sign turned out so darling! I think the 25 Cents on an angle would be cute too.

Thank you for sharing it at to What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a lovely week!

    Hugs,

  14. What an adorable transformation! I think you did an awesome job on the sign -- maybe what you see as "mistakes," make it look much more authentically old. I also think it would be charming if you added the 25 cents on an angle. Just my opinion!

  15. Love the sign. I'm usually too intimidated to make one. Luckily my business partner is very good at hand lettering signs for our boutique flower shop.

  16. Liz, I love it! I am not a chocolate lover, but a little hot fudge every now and then, YUM! My fav is hot caramel. I know, crazy! I like the extra space and the color is fab! So not fair that you can eat hot fudge and stay so thin. lol! I can not diet. If I try I find I eat more. The best thing for me is to stay busy. Would love to lose 20 lbs. but it's probably never gonna happen. This gal has a sweet tooth. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
    Jann

  17. Mmmmm, I love me a hot fudge sundae with bananas and cherries and whipped cream, too! I'm lactose intolerant, but I don't let that stop me from indulging once in a while. Your new sign is fabulous hanging in your window!!
