Junkin' Good Fun

I've been lax on sharing my latest hunting episodes, but then, I've also been busy getting furniture and things ready to take over to my daughter... my daughter who just got engaged Saturday! Yep, that's right! I'm going to be mother of the bride, you all. Woo hoo! Looks like I'll have my hands even more full for many months to come.

I've been playing blog hooky because I've been trying to finish up what feels like a zillion projects. In the process, I've managed to go out and drag home some cool new stuff, passed up some amazing curbside finds because I couldn't get them in the car (okay, I'm moving on... I'll try not to whine about it.) and I've been working on other projects I've gotten myself into.

Here are a few of the latest goodies I've procured.

It folds and then the feet fold up too! The top wood can be twirled open and closed to use as a vice or put pegs in the holes to hold your wood at an angle for cutting.  Five dollars! So excited! I need a workbench!

The Magic Junk Wand

You might think the lazy days of Summer have taken me by the hand and led me to a sunny seaside place for a relaxing toes-in the-sand vacation. Ha! No...the only lazy ways for me this Summer have come in regard to my blog. Yes, work on projects has ramped up with the Summer heat and humidity, so something's had to give, and that something has been Quirky Vistas.

For shame!

My only nod to the seaside lately has been this beach bum dresser that came by way of the curb.

The Story of a Nightstand Nuisance And More

The Junk Stalker and I have hit the streets with an eye for freebies. Not all that's free is free in every sense of the word though. There are the freebies that are time intensive to fix up and those that will put their hands in your wallet to get them in shape. Then there are those that are not free of pests.

Now, I completely freak out when it comes to roaches, real roaches known as Palmetto Bugs - they are the big suckers that could wrestle you to the ground and win. They are truly the stuff nightmares are made of.

This is a pretty picture of my Frangi Pani in bloom, because who wants to open a post and see a roach staring them in the face?

The Pick Goes On - Part Two With a Before & After

If you missed part one of the story of The Pick at a defunct business my friend Lynette and I went to, you can read that tale and see the images HERE.

Today, the story continues. Since I've shown you the trash we dug through, let me show something cute that I dug out of the mess.

I know, they're just little bottles and scissors, but I like 'em!

Thursday's Junk Has Far to Go

Like a race horse out of the gate, I took off at a gallop down the street. The blinders were off though. Mine was a race to win the prize of the day... some good old fashioned free junk from the curb.

Letting the Swatches Fall Where They May

Sometimes projects just don't fulfill our decor dreams. [pouty face]

Even though I managed to fit the 1960's console with the cool radio and record player into the living room (sort of - at least it's not sitting right inside the front door any more), it was sucking the life out of the space, a space I've been in the process of trying to lighten for the past year and a half.

Aqua Blue and Party Pink

The time has come for the "after" shot of my tall brown chest of drawers (and the little tray I bought last week), the painting endeavor whereby I threw out my back while standing in front of said chest holding one of the drawers out to my right. That's all it took. The back is much better, I'm no longer leaning like the tower of Pisa, but my back is only happy with constant movement or when lying down. I thought I was healed but this morning, it is still sort of calling the shots.

Brown Chest of Drawers Turned Blue

Now, I didn't despise this chest being brown. I stay on good terms with my furniture whenever possible. There was no animosity toward its dreariness. Its rustic look had a certain charm. However, I was in a mood and tired of the brown wood with the terra cotta floors. And mind you, there is also an Ethan Allen desk of a similar color wood to the left just outside of the picture. There was enough of that golden/orangey tone going on, so my other list of paint to-do's got tossed and paint gave this a similar look to the little chest in my kitchen that I also painted.

When The Car Breaks Down

So, my car broke down. I've been homebound. Having to have a car repair is bad for my wallet and my freedom. It is good, however, for forcing me to stay home and get things done. My plight actually provided incentive to make some paint decisions. When I'm not distracted by searching the streets for new junk, projects have a chance of seeing completion. This little brown chest found itself in the crosshairs of my paintbrush yesterday as a result of my car woes, and it ended up a fresh little bundle of joy.

The Little Rolling Cart That Could

From time to time...(read: all the time), I come home with stuff I've either gone searching for or that I've stumbled upon in my travels. Much of it is snagged from trash piles on the roadside and comes home looking like it - broken, dirty and less than impressive. Pretty soon I have piles in and around my house that don't look that much different than the piles from which I picked the stuff.

For a clean living conservative girl, I live a bit of a "trashy life".

The Little Stinker

At first there was just one. But one little stinker always seems to attract others until the whole place reeks of the startling scent of trouble. At least I'm learning to overcome that aspect of gleaning goods from the trash.

The good news is that I tried almost every remedy under the sun for eliminating furniture odor, and the fixes, along with the painting, seem to have finally done the trick. There is hope, for this Little Stinker and all those to come who will find their way to our doorstop in need of a new life.

When I first brought this guy home, he had been a chain smoker, apparently unaccustomed to using a coaster, and he seemed to have mistaken his top for an ashtray.

Remember him? He had been badly burned and his wood was marred
with all sorts of frightening sights.

Then and Now: A New Aqua Aesthetic

Color decisions are behind me. What was - is no more. I did what I had previously only dared, taking something pleasant enough (albeit too dark for a sunny south Florida locale) and gave it a bright and colorful new outlook. I'd probably be freaking out right now if I hadn't already lived with these items in their previous state since the mid to late 90's. Yes, it's hard to let go of what I've enjoyed, but I was, after all, growing weary of the heavy hues. So I'm going to give myself permission to say goodbye to the old and embrace the new brighter aesthetic of my living room.

THEN - Traditional Table Trio

I cannot even believe how empty this room looked before the Pier 1 lamps!

The room looks like we just moved in. We hadn't.

I know...it's a perfectly beautiful table. I really did love the end tables as is, except for the fact that they are large and between the three of them in the small space, they covered half the room in brown. Combined with the dark green couch and the previously brown wall, it was time for an overhaul or they would have to go. New furniture was out of budget, so I turned to my paint stash for a little help.

These two were mixed at about 2 parts green to 3 parts blue. The blue is really kind of dull and the green was just too green. Together, they became my new aqua accent.

As I said, what WAS, IS no more...except that under the new slipcover, the dark green couch remains. I'll need to take the cover off to enjoy it fully when it gets cool out again, only I just realized that when I do, the couch will clash with the newly painted tables. Figures! I didn't even think of that before! Oh well, one day and one design problem at a time.

NOW - Today's Triumph!

Here it is while I was in process of deciding about pillow placement and before testing out a bit of burlap as a table runner. This love seat still needs a raspberry, tangerine or coral pillow.

So with pillows in the center and a test piece of burlap on the table (The final product will be slightly longer and frayed and tied at the edges for a finished look.), it can go either way, but if we get to feeling there is too much aqua, then the burlap can tone it down. Added texture is always a good option.

If it was brighter I was after, I got it, no?

Color and light

By the time I put the burlap on the table, I had already taken a zillion pictures and didn't feel like taking many more, so here's the aqua in all its glory.

The burlap got tucked around the seat cushions for a minute to give an idea of how this chair would look with neutral cushions. The chair is really too big for this room with the ottoman; it may end up back in the Florida room if it starts to feel too crowded in here.

So there you have it. The brown has taken a dip into the aqua/blue/green design pool and I'm perfectly happy with the result.

Next up, the fireplace needs a long awaited revamp and the chair needs the cushions recovered or replaced. The cushion color doesn't work in here or the family room, but that could be an easy fix.

Then again, I could show you how the dining room has taken on a lighter and brighter outlook or share with you the little tray table I discovered in a nearby trash pile. It has also recently been given a paint revamp.

Decisions, decisions. Oh, the never-ending decisions...

I'll be sharing this at:

Lady of the House Productions Presents...

Liz Against the House - a video trailer about my adventure in house painting preparation. What? Doesn't everyone make movie trailers about such things? Well, if you enjoy watching others work, stick around til the end of the post...

The house had nearly beaten me. For three months, prep work to paint this aging little bungalow we call home had been ongoing. My son was home for a few months and together we busted our butts to pressure clean, scrape, sand and prime our vintage bundle of love, day after exhausting day.

He wielded the pressure cleaner.

This part was my job. Not sure which is worse, pressure cleaning or cleaning up after it.

Then my son had to leave. :( Now mind you, we had worked on this knuckle buster (literally) almost every day for all those months. Tedious and brutal. We scraped all the soffits and wood surround the house. 56 years of paint layers were in need of our tireless efforts. We obliged.

Then somewhere around the 3 month mark, I lost the will to scrape. I lost the will to sand. I lost the will to clean, caulk and prime. I wanted to look at pretty pictures on the internet and do fun projects with a much quicker payoff and a more satisfying outcome. Rather than just tear down and put back what I already had, and which, if I had my way, once done, should never have to be bothered with again, I wanted to create something new and fun and quicker.

After Cael left, and the temperature rose steadily (doesn't make for good scraping and sanding), life got in the way and I found every reason not to go out and finish the last big section of this prep work.

There may have been a little of this going on...

and this...

...until yesterday, that is. I don't know what it was, but suddenly, IT was back from wherever IT had taken a hiatus to for the past month. IT is My Mojo and it came bounding in the front door ready to work and drug me straight outside to open the garage door (For some reason, opening the garage door, maneuvering the ladder out and hauling everything around to the backyard is the hardest part of the project). Yet, just like that my "will" to sand and scrape was back. I was gonna get this thing off my list once and for all!

So I thought it would be fun to make a "quick" (yeah, right) video to satisfy my craving for a little creative fun and so that I might have something to show for my day's sweat and filth and achey muscles. After exerting the bulk of my muscle (stop laughing!),  there wasn't time to paint the primer onto that section of the soffit because the caulk had to dry. Unfortunately that part, which I did today, is not recorded in the adventurous movie trailer you are about to witness.

Just hold on...it's coming!

So I took my little camera out with me (it has video) and I set it without any thought to what I'd do with the footage, and I turned it on a minute or so at a time, kind of haphazard and, sorry about that, but without much care. I placed it in hanging planters, on the ground, on the ladder shelf, held it and did whatever I could think of to get a few shots. I found out today when I went to edit it that I needed certain shots I didn't have, but oh, well, next time I'll plan ahead. What's done is done. Before I started, I took a "before" photo of myself because I knew how I would look "after"... I did this to remember, lest I forget, why it is I may have lost the will in the first place.

I slathered on the Coppertone and I was ready to head out. (The added benefit of this work is that you do work up a decent tan.) Oh, happy day. See how happy I am. Yes, indeed, happy, happy, happy to get out there and sand above my head while standing on a ladder...and being covered with paint dust and other particles...what some of it is, I am not sure and I do not want to think about it, thank you.

I really had to offer a "before" because the "during" and "after" are embarrassingly unflattering to say the least. You'll see.

Having no experience at the photo in the mirror shots, I chopped myself off and couldn't get focused.

Tried numerous times, gave it another shot, nothing worked. (oh, whatever!)...
...then I gave up and went out because I had a lot of agonizing work to do. Oh well, who cares and anyway, "soft focus" is actually a valuable commodity after a certain age. You get the idea. There I am and it only gets worse.

Please note, I had to go up and down the ladder every few minutes for 4 hours for one reason or another AND YET I STILL do NOT have buns of steel (not even thighs of steel.) What a rip off! I have been working my arms until they ache for months and yet I STILL have FLAB WINGS too...the kind my kids walk by and flick so they can watch them swing. It's hopeless.

So, I ask you...How can this injustice go on despite my gung-ho efforts and my achey, exhaustive and determined work ethic? I still have cellulite and granny arms! I think that once you stumble over the "50 milestone" (after all, it is one rather large rock), you might expect that first you will hear a rather loud thud as you fall to the earth from whatever lofty place you may have once enjoyed in your youthful former glory, if such a glory actually ever existed (I'm finding whatever you were unhappy with during youth becomes something you only dream of having later and wish you would have appreciated while you had it. Enjoy it while you have it ladies!) Now the muscle groups have given up. Early retirement, I guess. They must have their job confused with government work. (oops, did I just say that?)

For the record, along the way, during my trek up and down the ladder, and with a killer neck ache, a sore arm, back and legs... I sat down because I had to rest, and I offered myself a treat. That's how it works around here. (and maybe it has a little something to do with the lack of buns and thighs of steel.)

Sorry, I didn't think to photograph it until after I sat down outside on the step in the afternoon heat and was already eating it. Not a very nice presentation. This is the hot fudge sauce I made the other day, and boy is it good. I'll try and post the recipe this weekend.

Here are the tools needed for the job, minus the ladder and the rag.

The bowl, spoon and its previous contents were absolutely vital to the job.

After I had sanded all my flabby arms and tender neck could stand, I caulked.

While sitting and enjoying my ice cream and hot fudge, I pondered the view looking across the back yard from the South side of the house where I was working.

Oh, and how did I look afterwards? Well...perfectly lovely, as you can imagine.

See why I showed you the "before"? I couldn't show my teeth because my face was so white it made my teeth look yellow.

Nice, huh? Can you believe I am showing you this? Have I no shame? Apparently not.

This was the skin on my chest.  I shudder to think what all that actually is.

I still have no real before and after shot of what I was working on. It's just not very eye-grabbing or exciting. It's hard core maintenance. Well here, I have bits and pieces.

I have this from the front of the house:

Oh, and in order to have a somewhat finished product to show, here is a section of the soffit with the primer on it. This I painted today... I know... you want to run right out and try this project yourself, don't you.

I know what you're saying...

You are probably "Oooohing and ahhhhhing", right? You are so impressed and inspired. I just know it.

Wait... What?! You're not? This doesn't do it for you?
Well, listen kids, sometimes you don't get eye candy. Sometimes you have to eat your broccoli, despite the fact that it stinks to high heavens and really doesn't taste good. So it goes, and so I will continue doing this "broccoli" job, although you can count on me to sneak some fun and more visually pleasing projects in here and there. With this awful section of a terrible job I didn't want to do behind me, I feel justified in getting back to a few creative projects the rest of the weekend.

Okay, enough rambling on and on...

"The Lady of the House" Productions is proud to present
("proud" might be a tad overstated)
the trailer for the epic adventure:

Liz Against the House
(you know, meaning something like Liz Against the World) for it has actually been a battle in many, many respects.

 This is a
"Just For The Fun of It" Film

If you enjoy watching someone else work, here you go, all condensed and under a minute. Yep, that's all there is to it. Doesn't do the 4 hours justice, but so be it. It is just a hint of the action and adventure that is my house painting project. Enjoy.

Gosh, you know what...maybe I should use music like that while I work next time. Might inspire me to epic things.

Until next time... eat your broccoli, but don't forget to enjoy a little ice cream too!

I'll be at
